Flea Market Treasures

Flea markets are a great place to stumble across interesting finds and pick up things you never knew you needed. I recently hit up a flea market one weekend and I came out with a few amazing things that I'm really loving!

Most of the vendors had at least a crate or more of used vinyl. But within the market there was an actual record store that was all alphabetically laid out and organized, I was in heaven. Vintage and vinyl go together like PB & J so this was an obvious no brainer of complete wonder. The only tip I'd have is make sure you take the record out of the sleeve and examine it for scratches and the like, as since they've been previously loved, wear and tear and sometimes, acts of carelessness, have caused some slight damage to these little guys.

There was also a vendor who was selling vintage cameras of all sorts. This one caught my eye because of it's industrial and modern look. So because of that I had assumed it was from sometime in the 80's but I was wrong. After a quick Google search (thanks Google for always being there for me) it actually dates 30 years from my initial expectation. This particular model was only made from 1953-1956 and takes 35mm film. I'm excited to start using my Argus A-Four! Hopefully a curation of pictures soon to come. 

This was a total last minute find because I was just about to leave the flea market but I realized there had been one place I hadn't looked through yet. So I went in and was able to not only pick up some vinyls but also pick up this pretty cool poster. This poster mentions some of my favourite people on it: Allen Ginsberg, Tim Leary and Jerry Garcia and the event they were at happened in the year of 1969. I thought this was so cool and because it mentioned so many of my fav's I knew I had to pick it up. It also has a really old school print and design on it and that's what drew me in, it actually looks like a flyer they would've handed out or something! 

The last thing I picked up was this gold bib-style necklace. The leaf pendant that's hanging from it is actually a real leaf that's been dipped in gold! When I found that out I definitely had to pick it up! This particular vendor had tables and tables of jewelry, some vintage (one piece dating at 100 years old) and some new. I loved a lot of the pieces but this one specifically caught my eye, and you know, I love a good statement necklace!  

Hopefully I can venture back some time soon because there's always something new and that's why I love them, because you can come across so many unique finds that are one-of-a-kind, that no one will have because they're either vintage or total one-off's. And you can also discuss the items with the vendors because there's bound to be an interesting story attached to some piece or you could possibly learn something you hadn't known before!

The Babe Rainbow

I've been really on my psychedelic kick as of late, discovering a bunch of new bands and listening to some old favourites. I came across this band the only way I know how, through the Youtube recommendations sidebar. The name intrigued me and kinda made me laugh, The Babe Rainbow. What a funny name for a band, so I gave it a listen and was pleasantly surprised. I couldn't find much on the band except what their "About" page on Facebook said but one thing I wasn't surprised about was that they hailed from Byron Bay. I always find myself being led back to that place or just Australia in general. I feel like it's a microcosm of awesome and creativity and everything that's coming from there is pure genius. Must be something in the water?

Australia's totally on the frontier of the resurgence of the psychedelic movement with bands like Tame Impala and POND and their fashion scene is awesomely creative with a bunch of brands that I've mentioned before on here. The band describes their sound as "punk mushroom". But their music is a dead ringer for something created in the 60's, as is their image, with their vintage lo-fi sound and Eastern Asian influence with the inclusion of the sitar on some of their songs. Now they don't have a full length album, only a couple songs under their belt, from what I could gather, but their full length LP is rumoured to be dropping on July 10th.

The first song of theirs I heard was "Secret Enchanted Broccoli Forest". The sweet sitar sound at the beginning takes you on a spiritual adventure as soon as the guitar and drums come in. And the video accompaniment is exactly what you'd expect from a song with that title. Makes me feel like I'm part of some gnarly hippie commune and just frolicking in a field or just sitting in the grass, the earth beneath my toes. 

"Evolution 1964" has more of a surf rock vibe with a groovy groove drenched in reverb. The video solidifies their band name, a total babe rainbow! 

I'm totally in love with this band, I can't stop listening to all their songs and am eagerly anticipating their debut LP! I feel like it'll easily be one of my fav's. We're In Tune

I've been totally feeling in tune with my inner 60's / 70's child and then I came across this picture and it put everything into perspective. 

I had just boughten a skirt almost exactly like the girl's on the left and realized this picture had been taken way back when. I decided to style this vintage inspired skirt but put my own twist on it. Something light and airy on top like this white gauze top I got in Mexico tucked into the corduroy skirt. On my feet, my favourite fringe-y moccasin boots that make me want to prance, prance, prance around, fringe blowing in the wind. I love short mod style mini skirts for the summer. Canadian winters are long and brutal, so for the less than a handful of months that my legs can see the sun I'll let them. This outfit totally fits in with the whole 60's / 70's trend that's so in right now and I'm so glad because I'm totally in love! 

Old pictures and clothes can always evoke feelings of nostalgia, even for a time never lived. Looking at this photograph I can feel myself transported to the point in time when it was taken. But what those girls are talking about, or the rationale for what's in the photograph, we'll never know, but it's always fun to wonder and dig within the depths of your imagination! Vintage inspired clothes or even vintage clothes themselves are some of my favourite things. I have such an appreciation for all things of the past and love when they can be resurfaced again because with it there's so much history attached and probably a great story too!
